Reinstate the IRA Charitable Rollover

Dear Member,

Action Alert Icon - BoomFebruary 2, Washington, DC - The IRA Charitable Rollover expired on December 31, 2011. Congress may soon consider legislation to reinstate the IRA Rollover as part of a larger bill to restore a number of tax "extender" provisions. We are writing to urge you to lend your voice of support to ensure this important charitable giving incentive is reinstated.

The IRA Rollover allows a donor who has reached age 70 1/2 to roll funds from their Individual Retirement Accounts directly to nonprofit organizations without incurring income tax on the transfer. This charitable giving incentive has allowed for millions of dollars of new contributions to support the work of nonprofit organizations. It is critical to maintain charitable giving options for individuals in order to provide a consistent source of revenue for programs and services to people and communities.

The Performing Arts Alliance invites you to be in touch with your members of Congress TODAY and urge support for restoring the IRA Charitable Rollover. We have created a sample letter for you to personalize. It is important to include information about you and your organization and the people you would not be able to serve if this charitable incentive were not reinstated.

What's At Stake:

The IRA Charitable Rollover has proven to spur millions of dollars in new charitable gifts to nonprofit organizations of all kinds, and it is critical to maintain charitable giving options for individuals in order to provide a consistent source of revenue for programs and services to people and communities.

The IRA Rollover was originally enacted as part of the Pension Reform Act of 2006 and permits donors age 70 1/2 and older to make tax-free charitable donations directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts, up to an annual ceiling of $100,000. The IRA Rollover provision expired in December of 2011. Without this provision, individuals who make charitable gifts from their retirement accounts would have to withdraw funds and treat them as taxable income, reducing the amount available for donations to charity.
